Matthew 21:1-12

This passage marks Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Jesus enters the city riding on a donkey as people lay down their cloaks and palm branches along the road. Jesus didn’t enter the city this way by chance. Jesus is making a statement. To Israel, the donkey was symbolic of royalty, because the donkey was the mount for a king. People laying their cloaks down on the road was a characteristic of royal parades. It was done to celebrate distinguished, royal visitors who made their arrival into the city. The statement He is making clear - He is the Messiah. Yet as we read the passage, the question is asked- “Who is this?” And they answer: “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” Jesus in His triumphant entry has shown every sign of His true nature to the people who are willing to see. But, this begs the question - Who is Jesus to us? What we believe about who Jesus is- will most definitely reflect in how we live our lives. Is Jesus a prophet with good teachings? Or is He the Messiah?
